When I hear music, I fear no danger. I am invulnerable. I see no foe. I am related to the earliest times, and to the latest.
~ Henry David Thoreau
...Although it's a bit more nuanced than that, I'd say. It can make one feel both invulnerable and vulnerable, elated and sobered. This isn't the first, nor shall it be the last, post about music. Perhaps you'll fault me for it, but I think I'd prefer to lose my ability to hear voices than to hear music. The thought of living without melody is dismal. It's certainly gotten me through some dismal times. Good times too. There's sound for every season.
Perhaps that's why the music we imbibe--whether created by ourselves or someone else--can come to define us. Some folks look at me like I have two heads when I say that, but I truly believe our favorite songs are a window--if not always to the soul, at least to the personality, interests, and general feelings. Exchanging songs is a great way to get to know someone or deepen relationships, at least in my album (baddum tsshh).
Meandering thoughts to say, I'd love to know what you've been listening to! A few years ago, I came up with this list of prompts and have recently brainstormed a few more that I hope will allow you to reflect upon your own favorites, now and in the past. Would love to know what song you'd choose for each. Feel free to share your playlist in the comments or on your own page. :)
More Melodies:
On repeat (lately)
On repeat (a few years)
On repeat (over a decade)
One that builds to a satisfying climax
One from a musician or group about whom you've "changed your tune"
One with a compelling beat (interpret how you will)
One that's nostalgic
One that feels nostalgic even though it's new
One whose lyrics resonated with you recently
One that brings to mind someone special
My sampling 2.0 if you care to listen.
I've nothing particularly deep to close with today. But music can speak for itself, no?
