Where words fail, music speaks. ~ Hans Christian Andersen

Truly one of my favorite quotes. One that finds its way into most everything I write on the subject of music. From scribbled post-it inspiration to my senior thesis. And for good reason.

How often I feel speechless in this world. Voiceless even. Verbalized words so easily topple over one another rendering each other incoherent. Or catch in the throat before reaching the lips.

But with music, there's clarity. There's understanding. Whether lyrics make sense, whether they're present at all, music communicates so poignantly. The pain we don't know how to express. The dissonant emotions we feel. The thrilling memories of our best moments replayed in our ears.

Listening to a deeply felt song is akin to having a personal conversation with the artist(s).

Could be an "introvert thing," but I believe we all have harmonics we call ours.

Mine are too many to recount. So I'll start with just one. Since rediscovering Radical Face about four years ago, I've been enamored by the wistful, at times haunting, stories he weaves through instruments and voice. Literally. Check out his Family Tree series.

Well worth a listen.
